Unexpected Morphophonological Outputs

چکیده
This paper examines unexpected morphophonological outputs under diminutive rime change in Huojia, Jiyuan and Hongan, and explores a systemic contrastbased approach to show how preservation of phonological/phonetic contrasts serves to preserve morphophonological contrasts within the root-diminutive paradigm. The proposed anlaysis (i) shows that contrast-based constraints can provide a unified account of certain types of unexpected but systematic linguistic forms, (ii) adds to the growing body of research supporting a systemic approach to contrast preservation in phonology and morphology, and (iii) demonstrates that the notion of systemic contrast preservation can account for otherwise unexplained morphophonolgoical outputs and why contrast-based constraints should be extended to morphophonology and morphological paradigms.

Contrast Preservation in Morphophonology: Diminutive Rime Change in Hong’an Chinese
Earlier analyses of rime change (Lin 1989, 1993) posit subsegmental affixes such as featural or prosodic affixes (e.g. [+back, +round] or a mora/default vowel) and templatic output restrictions (e.g. an open syllable). In some cases of rime change, however, there are puzzling unexpected alternations or exceptions that are difficult to explain and analyze. This study examines Hong’an diminutive ...
متن کاملA comparison of two theoretically driven treatments for verb inflection deficits in aphasia.
Errors in the production of verb inflections, especially tense inflections, are pervasive in agrammatic Broca's aphasia (*The boy eat). The neurolinguistic underpinnings of these errors are debated. One group of theories attributes verb inflection errors to disruptions in encoding the verb's morphophonological form, resulting from either a general phonological deficit or a morphological affixat...
متن کاملParallel Morpho - Syntactic Constraints in European Portuguese
1 Abstract In this paper I shall propose an account of morphosyntactic phenomena like European Por-tuguese (hence: EP) cliticization in terms of interacting morphophonological and surface-syntactic constraints. In particular, I suggest that mor-phophonological constraints are partially under-speciied with respect to morpheme linearization, information that will be added monotonically by surface...
متن کاملRunning head: SYNTAX AND FORM IN SENTENCE PRODUCTION Syntax and Form in Language Production: An Investigation of Gender Agreement in Romance Languages
In the current paper, we assess whether morphophonological information (consistent, inconsistent or ambiguous with the syntactic information) affects syntactic encoding. We report four experiments (one in Italian, one in French and two in Spanish) in which we elicited gender agreement errors between the subject of a sentence and a predicative adjective using the same methodology used by Viglioc...
متن کاملPhonotactics and morphophonology in early child language: Evidence from Dutch
This research investigates children’s knowledge of how surface pronunciations of lexical items vary according to their phonological and morphological context. Dutch-learning children aged 2.5 and 3.5 years were tested on voicing neutralization and morphophonological alternations. For instance, voicing does not alternate between the pair [pɛt]∼[pɛtən] (cap∼caps) but does in [bɛt]∼[bɛdən] (bed∼be...
